How It Works

The true cost of any car
in three steps

Most car shoppers only see the sticker price. CarCostCX shows you the four costs that make up what you'll actually spend every single month — personalized to your credit, location, and driving habits.

The Process

Simple. Fast. Accurate.

From setup to your true monthly cost in under five minutes.

01
Create your profile
Tell us the four things that determine what a car actually costs you: your credit score, driving record, zip code, and how many miles you drive each year. This takes about 60 seconds and never requires a Social Security number or hard credit pull.
Why this matters: Two people looking at the same car can have monthly costs that differ by $200+ based on their insurance rate and loan rate alone. We calculate yours, not the average.
02
Search any vehicle
Browse our inventory of 847,000+ vehicles from dealers across the country. Filter by make, model, year, price, body style, and more. Every single listing shows the four cost components instantly — before you click into the vehicle detail page.
What you see on every listing: Estimated loan payment, estimated insurance rate, projected maintenance cost, and fuel cost — all calculated for your specific profile.
03
See your true monthly cost
On every vehicle detail page you'll see the full breakdown. One clear number at the top — your true monthly cost. Below it, each of the four components explained so you understand exactly where every dollar goes.
The number that matters: $712/month is very different from $389/month. The first is what you'll actually pay. The second is just the loan payment the dealer shows you.
The Four Costs

What we actually calculate

🏦
Loan Payment
Based on your credit score, the vehicle price, current interest rates, and your down payment. We show you what your actual monthly payment will be — not the teaser rate.
$389/mo

Insurance
Calculated from your driving record, zip code, vehicle type, and credit profile. Insurance is often the biggest surprise cost buyers face — we surface it upfront.
$142/mo

Maintenance
Based on historical reliability data for each specific make and model. Some cars cost twice as much to maintain as others — we show you that before you fall in love with it.
$87/mo
Example estimate
Fuel
Calculated from your annual mileage, local gas prices, and the vehicle's EPA fuel economy rating. For EVs, we calculate your estimated charging cost instead.

Common Questions

Everything you want to know

Is CarCostCX really free for buyers? +
Yes, completely free. No subscription, no credit card, no premium tier. CarCostCX is funded by partnerships with insurance companies and financial institutions — not by charging you.
Does creating a profile affect my credit score? +
No. We never do a hard credit pull. You enter your approximate credit score and we use that to calculate estimates. Nothing is reported to credit bureaus and your score is never impacted.
How accurate are the cost estimates? +
Our calculations are estimates based on real data — current interest rates, actual insurance carrier pricing models, historical maintenance data by vehicle, and live fuel prices by zip code. They are designed to give you a realistic range, not a guaranteed quote. Actual costs may vary slightly based on your specific circumstances.
Where does the inventory data come from? +
Inventory is fed directly from participating dealers through their DMS (Dealer Management System) connections and daily inventory feeds. Listings are updated every 24 hours to reflect accurate pricing and availability.
Can I contact a dealer directly from CarCostCX? +
Yes. Once you find a vehicle you're interested in, you can submit your information directly to the dealer from the listing page. The dealer receives your contact information and can reach out to schedule a test drive or discuss the vehicle.
Does CarCostCX work for electric vehicles? +
Yes. For EVs, we replace the fuel cost component with an estimated charging cost based on your local electricity rates and the vehicle's efficiency rating. All other components — loan, insurance, and maintenance — are calculated the same way.
