Tire rotation is the most underappreciated maintenance service in terms of return on investment. The cost is minimal, the time required is negligible, and the benefit in extended tire life is significant. Yet many vehicle owners skip rotations either because they do not know they should be done or because they underestimate the benefit.
Why Tires Wear Unevenly
Tires do not wear evenly by position on the vehicle. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, which represent the majority of passenger cars and most compact SUVs, the front tires handle both propulsion and steering forces in addition to braking. They typically wear 30 to 50 percent faster than rear tires under normal driving conditions. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, rear tires wear faster from propulsion loads. AWD vehicles distribute wear more evenly but still develop position-specific wear patterns.
What Rotation Accomplishes
By moving tires from high-wear positions to lower-wear positions on a regular schedule, rotation equalizes wear across all four tires. A set of tires that would last 40,000 miles without rotation might last 55,000 to 65,000 miles with regular rotations. On a set of tires that costs $600, this represents $150 to $250 in additional tire life from a service that costs $20 to $50 per rotation. The math strongly favors regular rotation.
Rotation Patterns
The correct rotation pattern depends on whether your vehicle has directional or non-directional tires, whether the front and rear tires are the same size, and the drive configuration. Most front-wheel-drive vehicles use a forward cross pattern that moves rear tires straight forward and front tires cross to the rear. Rear-wheel-drive vehicles often use a rearward cross. Directional tires can only move front-to-back on the same side due to their tread pattern. Staggered fitments on some performance vehicles cannot be rotated at all.
Integrating with Oil Changes
The simplest approach is rotating tires at every oil change on modern vehicles with 7,500 to 10,000-mile oil change intervals. Many shops offer oil change and tire rotation combinations for $60 to $80 that make the integration easy. Setting a calendar reminder or relying on the mileage interval in your vehicle's service tracker ensures the interval is not forgotten.
