Indiana summers bring sustained heat that taxes vehicle systems in ways winter never does. The cooling system, air conditioning, tires, and electrical system all face elevated stress during summer months, and a vehicle that ran perfectly through spring can fail when temperatures peak in July and August. A pre-summer maintenance check is an investment in reliability during the season when breakdowns are most uncomfortable.
Cooling System
The cooling system is the most critical summer maintenance concern. Check the coolant level in the overflow reservoir when the engine is cold. Inspect all coolant hoses for softness, cracking, or swelling, especially at the connections. Inspect the radiator cap seal. A pressure test by a shop can identify small leaks before they become failures. Replace coolant according to your manufacturer's schedule, typically every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, to maintain its corrosion inhibitor effectiveness.
Air Conditioning
If your AC is not cooling as effectively as it did last summer, have it inspected before the hottest months arrive. The most common cause is refrigerant loss through small leaks in the system. An AC recharge costs $100 to $200 at an independent shop. If a leak is present, repair costs vary significantly depending on the leak location. Cabin air filter replacement, which takes five minutes and costs $15 to $30, can also meaningfully improve airflow and cooling efficiency.
Tires
Hot pavement increases tire temperature significantly, and underinflated tires running on hot asphalt can fail. Check tire pressure during the temperature transition from spring to summer and adjust to the vehicle door placard specification, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Inspect tires for tread wear and sidewall condition before summer highway travel.
Battery
While winter is notorious for battery failures, heat actually accelerates battery degradation more than cold. High temperatures accelerate internal corrosion and water loss in the battery. A battery that survived winter may be weakened by summer heat and fail during autumn. Have batteries more than three years old load-tested before summer.
